Finding English words that end with a silent "e" is extremely easy because there are literally hundreds of them. Think of all of those four letter words that end in an "e." Chances are, that is a silent "e!"
English Words that End with a Silent E
Now that we have promised that hundreds of English words end with a silent e, let's pull through on that promise and give you a list of them.
Reasoning for the Silent E
Now that we have reviewed a number of the words in the English language ending with the silent "e," perhaps it is a good idea to review the purpose of the silent "e." After all, grammar is not just about memorizing a list of words that fit whatever description you are looking for. Grammar is also about studying linguistics and understanding why certain letters come into play in certain situations and how they all work together to create the language with which you are familiar.
Here are the main functions of the silent "e."
- A silent "e" can make the vowel before it into a long sounding vowel. For example, in the words "code" and "wine" the "e" prevents them from being "cod" and "win." The "e" allows them to make the long sound and say their names.
- The silent "e" can also make certain harsher sounding vowels sound softer. For example, in the words "grace" and "age," we do not get the harsh sounds of "c" and "g" as you would in the words "cat" and "good."
- In words, every syllable needs to have a vowel in it. Without the silent "e," words like "handle" would violate a basic rule of English grammar.
- The silent "e" also prevents singular words from looking like plural words. Look at the word "moose." If there were no "e" in there, you would just have moos and it really could not mean either one moose or many of them.
Therefore, the silent "e" is not just a pesky little device infused into words to drive you crazy. This letter actually has several rather pertinent and important functions in the English language.
